SUMMARY:Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in the Park (Fools & CCC)
DESCRIPTION:A Company of Fools is presenting Hamlet\, Shakespeare’s most iconic play\, at New Edinburgh Park on the east lawn of the Fieldhouse. \nTheir fast-paced 90-minute rendition of the Bard’s greatest tragedy will feature disemboweled puppets\, a sword fight to the death\, live underscoring\, and 5 actors taking on 15 different roles. \nJoin the Fools this summer as they delve into the depths of the human experience and have a few laughs along the way. Whether you’re a Shakespeare nerd or this is your first foray with the Bard since high school\, our foolish take on Hamlet has something for everyone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBring a lawn chair or blanket\, bug spray\, picnic\, and your sense of humour. \nPay what you can\, with a suggested donation of $20 per person.  Pass-the-hat donations are collected at the end of the performance and can be submitted in the form of cash\, credit card\, cheque\, or bars of gold. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAbout Hamlet \nReturning home to attend her father’s funeral\, Hamlet discovers that another ceremony has already taken place: the marriage of her mother to her uncle. That’s right\, her dead father’s brother. When Hamlet is visited by her father’s ghost demanding that she avenge his murder\, Hamlet begins to wonder – is it she who has gone mad or everyone around her? \nThe play takes place in a fairytale-inspired Elsinor\, an extravagant kingdom ruled by the freshly crowned King Claudius. But don’t let its decadent appearance fool you\, there’s something rotten in this fairytale wonderland. \nRe-imagined to feature a female Hamlet\, her feigned madness is a rejection of feminine expectations and an attempt to free herself from a fake world. This is the story of a quest for justice that exposes what happens when a young woman challenges authority. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Team \n\n\n\n\nOttawa’s Maryse Fernandes stars as Hamlet and reimagines Shakespeare’s iconic protagonist as a ‘mad young woman’. Micah Jondel DeShazer\, who played Ariel and Caliban in last summer’s production of The Tempest\, stars alongside Maryse as the diabolical King Claudius. \nRounding out the team is Ottawa’s Jacqui Du Toit\, a storyteller and founder of The Origin Arts Centre\, as Queen Gertrude. Fools’ veteran Mitch Rose plays both father and son\, Polonius and Laertes; and Andrea Massoud lends her talents to the roles of Ophelia\, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern\, and Horatio. \nA Company of Fools’ Artistic Director Nicholas Leno and resident designer Vanessa Imeson spearhead the production’s creative team. Fools fans will remember Nicholas and Vanessa’s carnivalesque take on Romeo+Juliet in 2019. \nAbout the Fools \nBest known for our Shakespeare in the Park series\, we tour 90-minute versions of Shakespeare’s hits to parks across Eastern Ontario. \nWe believe that it doesn’t matter where you live\, how much you make\, or how old you are: theatre should be accessible to everyone! All of our performances are for PWYC donations\, family-friendly\, and our touring model means we bring the theatre right to your backyard. \nOver the last 30 years\, we’ve developed our signature foolish approach to staging Shakespeare. We work with a small cast of actors to embody 15 different characters within a production and employ styles of slapstick\, mask\, and puppetry to create a family-friendly experience. We help first-time theatregoers discover their love for live performance through our foolish approach to storytelling! \nThe Deets

SUMMARY:Ottawa Marathon Cheering Station (CCC)
DESCRIPTION:The New Edinburgh Cheering Station is back on course with the support of the Crichton Community Council’s (https://newedinburgh.ca/ccc/) volunteers and the cooperation of Mackay United Church. Join us to welcome thousands of participants in this year’s Ottawa Marathon!  Come to the Cheering Station located on MacKay Street this year due to the construction on Stanley Avenue. The New Edinburgh Cheering Station is strategically located between kilometre 35 and 36\, on MacKay Street between Dufferin Road and Keefer Street.  The leg between kilometre 35 and 36 of the 42.2 km course will run down MacKay Street this year.  (The traditional route through the neighbourhood has been modified because of the construction on Stanley between Union and Sussex.). \nCome and be amazed at the athleticism of the early morning elite runners. Stay on through the morning to support those who are moving at a slower pace. Together\, we’ll energize runners with all kinds of positive encouragement as they head into the challenges of the final 7 kilometres of the marathon: music; sign making; face painting; sidewalk chalk; noise makers; personalized words of encouragement amplified to runners as they pass; coffee and treats for the early risers; freezies and other refreshments later on; indoor public washrooms on site. \n\n\nThe elite runners should make their first pass by the neighbourhood\, heading west along Sussex\, around 8:25 a.m..  More than 5\,000 runners will follow them.  The fastest of the pack will return to the neighbourhood from Beechwood around 8:45 a.m. (after looping around Rockcliffe and Manor Park). \nGive runners some positive memories of the several minutes they’ll spend in New Edinburgh.  Show our neighbourhood’s pride.  Bring your most positive energy to the cheering station on MacKay Street\, near Dufferin Road.  Loud words of encouragement\, noise makers\, signs and costumes are all welcome. \nBy 10:00 a.m. all of the elite runners will have long finished the race\, but those that remain on course need your support!  Given that most people run a marathon in about 4.5 hours\, at about 10:45 a.m. the hordes will be passing the cheering station on MacKay . \nThe last 7 km of a marathon are the most difficult for many people.  Let’s rally to raise the spirits of all participants\, many of whom may be in the midst of one of the most difficult challenges they have ever undertaken. \nMore information about the Ottawa Marathon can be found here: https://www.runottawa.ca/races-and-events/ottawa-marathon

SUMMARY:Fieldhouse Films: Little Shop of Horrors (CCC)
DESCRIPTION:After a day of plants at Garden Day\, join your neighbours for a showing of the comedy-horror-musical “Little Shop of Horrors”.  This musical take on the 1960s low-budget cult-classic about a poor shopkeep and his strange plant from outer space is sure to GROW on you.  Starring Rick Moranis\, Steve Martin\, Bill Murray\, Ellen Greene and John Candy\, plus lots of fun cameos.  Directed by Frank Oz (the voice of Yoda\, Miss Piggy\, Cookie Monster and Grover)\, Little Shop of Horros features songs from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman\, before they found Disney fame penning beloved songs from “The Little Mermaid”\, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alladin”. Stay after the film to see the newly discovered original not so happy ending. Remember\, whatever they offer you\, don’t feed the plants!
